How do I record audio from the computer to a separate recording device?

I need to record music onto a digital camera for editing. I can't upload the audio file because the software I'm using won't let me. Right now I'm just recording the sound coming from the monitor speakers, but the quality isn't very good. I'm thinking of soldering a mono headphone jack to an AV in/out audio cable so I can plug the digital camera into the headphone socket. Is that a good idea?

1. All of the computers I have owned have had a line output jack on the sound card. A patch cord from the computer line out to your camera should work great if your camera accepts analog audio.
